Choosing a digital art canvas size feels like it should be simple.

You open Photoshop, Procreate, Clip Studio Paint or another drawing app. You type in two numbers. You begin drawing. Nothing catches fire.

The problem usually appears later.

Maybe the artwork looks sharp on your tablet but turns soft when printed. Maybe the composition fits an Instagram square but not the 8 × 10-inch print you want to sell. Maybe you created such a large file that your app gives you six layers and the emotional support of a spinning loading icon.

The right canvas size depends on what you plan to make, how large it will be printed and whether the artwork is raster or vector. Making those decisions before you draw can save hours of resizing, cropping and rebuilding details.

For most raster artwork intended for print:

  1. Decide the largest physical size you realistically want to print.
  2. Create the artwork at that size using approximately 300 pixels per inch.
  3. Add the printer’s required bleed when the artwork reaches the trimmed edge.
  4. Leave extra room around important subjects in case you need to crop for another format.
  5. Confirm that your device can handle the resulting file without severely limiting layers or performance.

The basic calculation is:

Print width in inches × 300 = canvas width in pixels

Print height in inches × 300 = canvas height in pixels

An 8 × 10-inch print at 300 pixels per inch would therefore require a canvas measuring:

2,400 × 3,000 pixels

Start With The Finished Product

Do not begin by asking, “How large of a canvas can my tablet handle?”

Begin by asking:

What is this artwork supposed to become?

A drawing made only for social media needs a different setup than an illustration intended for a 24 × 36-inch poster.

Think about the largest likely use.

Suppose your artwork is 4,000 × 5,000 pixels. At 300 PPI, its approximate print dimensions are:

  • 4,000 ÷ 300 = 13.33 inches
  • 5,000 ÷ 300 = 16.67 inches

That file could produce an approximately 13.3 × 16.7-inch print at 300 PPI before cropping or adding bleed.

Why 300 PPI Is A Good Starting Point

A 300 PPI document is a practical standard for many printed illustrations, photos and design projects. Procreate describes 300 DPI as the most common value for printed images, and Photoshop treats resolution as the pixel density used to determine print quality.

That does not mean every file in existence must be 300 PPI.

A large poster viewed from several feet away may not need the same density as a small art print inspected at arm’s length. Some specialized print processes have their own requirements. A printer may also request a different setup.

Use 300 PPI as a dependable planning target, not a sacred number carved into a graphics tablet.

When a specific printer provides a template or file requirement, follow that specification.

Do Not Confuse Changing The Number With Adding Detail

A common mistake is opening a small image, changing its resolution setting from 72 to 300 and assuming it is now print-ready.

The important question is whether the software added pixels.

Photoshop separates resolution from resampling. Its Resample setting adds or removes pixels when image dimensions change. Simply changing how existing pixels are assigned to a physical size does not invent the fine brushwork, clean edges or texture that were missing from the original artwork.

Consider a 1,080 × 1,080-pixel social media image.

At 300 PPI, it prints at only:

1,080 ÷ 300 = 3.6 inches

Changing the file’s resolution label does not turn it into a detailed 12-inch print unless the image is resampled. Resampling software can estimate new pixels, but estimated detail is not the same as artwork created at the proper size.

Upscaling can help rescue a file. It should not be the normal plan.

Pay Attention To Aspect Ratio

Resolution is not the only reason artwork gets cropped.

Different print sizes use different proportions, also called aspect ratios.
